Squid Game (59)
I watched Squid Game season 1 in 2021, and I'm unsure if I will be back to cover season 2.
Squid Game became an overnight sensation in 2021, and to this day I'm still a bit unsure on how to feel about that. As I mention in my reviews, I enjoyed the show for what it was: a simple story with a creative premise that entertained me quite easily, but ultimately led to an underwhelming conclusion with disappointing reveals. Yet this is the show that made such an enormous cultural impact and won over so many people, and I still remain concerned by this. If an average TV show like this can make such a huge impact, then what does this mean for the television industry as a whole? I hope that we do not gravitate away from longer seasons and multi-season long storylines in favour of short-term gratification, the type of which we can easily get from movies anyways. Because of my reservations about where a TV show like this will take the industry, I find myself with a complicated relationship with Squid Game. I don't hate the show, but I hate what it represents as it is antithetical to everything I love about television.
