Succession (71)
I reviewed Succession in 2023 after the show concluded its final season. It was my first watch of the show.
Succession is a highly acclaimed TV show for good reason. There is such little television out there that is made with as much competence as this one. To quickly list off everything I love about this show: the characters, the writing, the acting, the dialogue, the directing, the visuals, the setting, the pacing, the story, the comedy, and the ending are all fantastic. If you're still wondering if this show is good enough to watch, then my answer for you is go watch it right now, it is more than good enough. However, there are a few caveats; the show does well to work around them, but they exist regardless. If you aren't into cussing or swearing, this show is packed to the brim with profanity and that can be offputting, especially since the dialogue has been dramatized to the point where it can sometimes feel like too much. However, it fits perfectly with the characters we get to meet. Speaking of the characters, it's important to mention that there really isn't a likeable person in this entire show. Everyone is awful, and it can be challenging to find somebody to root for. However, that doesn't mean the characters are bad; quite the opposite in fact. The characters in this TV show are some of my favourites in all of television because of how much depth they are afforded by the creator and writers. The fact that we can still understand and sympathize with these characters allows the show to work around the issue that nobody here is a good person. Get past these few preferential barriers, and you will be treated to one of the finest TV dramas out there, complete with fantastic witty dialogue, some of the best character acting and writing you will see on television, and many fantastic episodes that you will remember for a long time. Then add on the fact that this is a rare TV show that blends procedural and serial television by having every episode be a standalone experience while still telling an overarching story. When you put everything together, you have one of the most satisfying TV experiences out there. Go watch this show.
